Gary Hill
At the Center for Contemporary Art
**Screenings of movies by Gary Hill will be held on Tuesday, 11.12.12 and Tuesday, 8.1.13 at 19:00 the CCA.

The Center for Contemporary Art is pleased to announce a first solo exhibition in Israel by video-art pioneer Gary Hill (b. 1951, California).
Gary Hill is one of the first artists to work with video as an artistic medium during the 1970s. His work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions in museums and institutions worldwide, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Guggenheim Museum, New York; Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Basel; Museu d’Art Contemporani, Barcelona; and The Venice Biennial, among many others.
Since his early work, Hill has recognized the potential of video, not only as a means of cultural critique in relation to television and cinema, but also as a tool for philosophical investigation, exploring themes such as the difference between the perception of image and the perception of sound, and their distinction from the physical. This investigation has led him to develop the phenomenological aspect of video, especially the medium of video installation.
The exhibition will include four seminal video installations from different periods in Hill’s development:
Viewer (1995) puts the viewer in a long hallway face-to-face with a line of Latino workers, creating intense eye contact that gives one the illusion of physical touch.
Wall Piece (2000) is a Hill classic in which the artist tries to recite a text while bumping repetitively into a wall.
Remembering Paralinguay (2000) is another critical single-channel installation in which a woman approaches the camera, making sounds that vary between singing and primeval, animistic language.
In Depth Charge (2012), a newly created work, five monitors and a screening installation create an intimate, bizarre atmosphere. The monitors lie on the floor, showing the artist on L.S.D trip, while projected on the wall above is an electronically distorted image of the infamous jazz musician, Bill Frisell, who hovers as if watching over the vulnerable artist.
The four pieces represent the themes that Hill investigated from the 1970s to today.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog including an interview with Garry Hill by Sergio Edelsztein, the exhibition curator.

** בימי שלישי 11.12.12 ו- 8.1.13 בשעה 19:00 יוקרנו שני סרטים נוספים של גרי היל באודיטוריום של המרכז לאמנות עכשווית.
המרכז לאמנות עכשווית גאה להציג לראשונה בישראל תערוכת יחיד של חלוץ הווידיאו ארט, גרי היל (נולד בקליפורניה בשנת 1951).
גרי היל נמנה עם ראשוני האמנים אשר בתחילת שנות ה-70 החלו לעבוד עם הווידיאו כמדיום אמנותי. עבודותיו הוצגו ברחבי העולם ובתערוכות יחיד במוזיאונים מרכזיים, ביניהם המוזיאון לאמנות עכשווית, סן פרנסיסקו, מרכז פומפידו, פריז, מוזיאון גוגנהיים בניו יורק, המוזיאון לאמנות עכשווית בברצלונה, המוזיאון לאמנות עכשווית בבזל, בביאנלה לאמנות בוונציה ועוד.
מתחילת דרכו הבין היל את הפוטנציאל הטמון במדיום הווידיאו, לא רק כאמצעי ביקורת על הטלוויזיה והקולנוע, אלא ככלי המתאים לחקר סוגיות פילוסופיות כגון ההבדלים בין התפיסה הוויזואלית והשמיעתית ובין שני אלה לגופני ולגשמי. מחקר זה הביא אותו במהרה לפתח את ההיבטים הפילוסופיים של הווידיאו ובעיקר את מדיום המיצב (video installation).
בתערוכה, אשר תתקיים במרכז לאמנות עכשווית, יוצגו 4 ממיצבי הוידיאו החשובים של היל מתקופות שונות:
Viewer (הצופה) משנת 1995 היא עבודה המעמידה את הצופה במסדרון ארוך, מול שורה של פועלים מקסיקאים, ויוצרת קשר עין אינטנסיבי הגורם לצופה אשליה של מגע פיזי ממשי.
Wall Piece (עבודת קיר) משנת 2000, הינה עבודה קלאסיות של היל בה נראה האמן כשהוא מנסה לדקלם טקסט בזמן שניתקע שוב ושוב בקיר שלפניו.
Remembering Paralinguay (זיכרון קדם שפה) הוא מיצב וידיאו בערוץ אחד ובו נראית אישה המתקרבת אל הצופה ומתחילה להוציא קולות וצלילים אשר נעים בין שירה לשפה קדמונית או חייתית.
בעבודה חדשה מהשנה האחרונה,Depth Charge, היל יוצר סביבה אישית וביזארית בה מופיעה דמותו על חמישה מוניטורים שמונחים על הרצפה, כשהוא תחת השפעתו של טריפ אל אס די. על הקיר מעל ההתרחשות זו מופיעה הקרנה של ביל פריסל (Bill Frisell) – גיטריסט הג’ז הנודע, במעין עיוות אלקטרוני הנותן את התחושה שהמוסיקאי שומר על האמן הפגיע והחשוף.
ארבעת העבודות המוצגות בתערוכה מהוות מבחר מיצג לנושאים בהם מתעסק גרי היל מאז שנות ה-70 ועד היום.
התערוכה תלווה בקטלוג ובו ראיון עם גרי היל שערך עמו אוצר התערוכה – סרג’יו אדלשטיין.
