Recommended: Desert Life- an independent art exhibition
What I find more and more compelling about Tel Aviv, is the fact that everyday I come across something new. Tel Aviv is a small city but it is full of energy and there are so many things happening here, so many different persons and different dynamics.
Yesterday, I was walking with my mother and as it often happens to us, we did not really know where we were going. Suddenly, we saw an event going on in a peculiar space. It turned out to be the opening of an independent art exhibition, called Desert Life. It surely was an exciting suprise!
The exhibition “takes a conceptual look at man’s survival and existence in the desert- for good and for bad”. Eight artists, some of which grew up in a desert environment while the others moved to the desert from a urban environment, particapte in this exhibition and display works that treat and explore the theme of life in the desert.
Here are my favorite works from the show:
Diana Brody, “Support System”, 2006
Miri Fleisher, “Untitled”, 2008
Jasmin Gershony-Geyer, “View of my Homeland”, 2008
The most exciting part of the exhibition is its setting. The exhibition takes place in the courtyard and rooms of what was the first department store in Tel Aviv. The floors are filled with sand, recalling the desert and in the courtyard one can see the now unused cast iron elevator, the first of its kind in the city.
