PRESS RELEASE

Storms and Stress (in reference to the German movement, among the presages of romanticism) is the first solo exhibition in Israel for artist Brian Alfred. It is devoted to a corpus of works from recent years, which deals with post mortem reporting from the sites of actual events.

Flood (2010) depicts an urban, almost apocalyptic deluge from a bird’s-eye view, such as is familiar to us from news reports making exemplary use of extreme footage shot from a helicopter. In the case of the flood, the moment after, when the water level attains a pastoral stability, carries a different threat within it from that at the height of the storm, something akin to the desperation that accompanies the suspense in some of Hitchcock’s key scenes. That Alfred has chosen to freeze this particular moment is no accident.

Alfred’s pictorial language seeks to drag down the helicopter gaze, to grant it anew the qualities of a human gaze at ground level. While the formal arrays are familiar to us from the world of computer graphics, the relative avoidance of bold primary colors and the manifest handicraft in their making charge the sights with an intimacy that has its origin in first-person reportage.

The segments that Alfred has chosen, some of them from views which he himself has photographed while driving, or on tourist jaunts, also facilitate the sense of a live,
real-time gaze. Manifest in Alfred’s use of the fragment is his demand that the viewer remain alert: to distinguish between the ‘dry’ information conveyed by the body of the image, and the products of an image-stricken consciousness automatically filling-in the missing pieces.

The darkness of night. a silhouette of a bridge, apparently a highway. At the margin of the silent screen, shadowy figures of demonstrators carrying banners slowly advance. Their progress is animated by a mechanical movement along the diagonal of the bridge. This diminution of the human presence, in this moonlit scene, which appears in the video/animation work Moonlight March (2011), casts light on the line that artist Brian Alfred has drawn between devastation, calamity and disaster on one hand, and the serenity, tending to stagnation, which bounds such events on the other.

Brian Alfred (b. 1974), lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. MFA gardauate at Yale University (1999). He has exhibited widely internationally. Recent solo exhibitions include shows at Mary Boone Gallery, New York, Haunch of Venison (Zurich, Berlin, New York and London), SCAI The Bathhouse,Tokyo (2007) and Phoenix Art Museum (2004).
